I have recently started reading the books. I had only watched the movie before. I loved the movies, but I think the books are a lot better. I have to ask because it has been awhile since I have seen the movies, but it seems like there are a lot of things that happen in the books that they don’t show in the movies?
It does seem though that the game is doing a wonderful job of following the books and now that I am in the middle of reading the books it makes the game feel so much more immersive. I feel more of a part of it. If you are enjoying the game you should give the books another read or read them if you haven’t before. It is a wonderful addition to playing the game!
The movies made some significant changes to the original story in order to make a good movie. I never read the books but that is what people that had tell me.
Yeah it seems like Arwen played a bigger part in the movies, and I didn’t remember Tom Bombadil in the movies either. They prob should have put him in. He is awesome!
If you like Tom, J, make sure to pick up a copy of “The Tolkien Reader” at some point. Whole gaggle of tales for him and Goldberry in there. The books, are vastly different from the movies. In fact, as they are, they wouldn’t make very good movies, hence why Phillipa Boyens, Fran Walsh, and Peter Jackson changed pieces and parts to make it fit into 3hrs a piece as best as they could.Without a doubt though, the books are better. There’s just so much more to “see” in them, and you’re right. Reading them while playing LotRO really adds to the game.
I enjoyed the books also! Although I think the movie series is one of the all time best.
Lord, I knew the day would come when I would hear somebody… a gamer… a fantasy MMO gamer… say they have only seen the movies.
Enjoy them though, they really are good. There is a theory that Tolkien wrecked fantasy because, after reading his books, a lot of other stuff just seems to be minor league.
I am about due for my every 24 month re-read of the books.
On a side note, “The Children of Hurin” is just as masterful as the trilogy or “The Hobbit”. Pick it up also, for a taste of what Middle-Earth was like before Sauron or Smaug.
Yeah I am done with the books now and I am kind of sad because I have nothing else lol. I loved the books! Way more than the movies too. I will have to pick up anything else I can find.
Hehe my husband loves the setting. I only read the books after seing the movies and loved the books too. I am actually quite surprised he has not wanted to scope out LOTRO.
I heard Peter Jackson cast Tom Baker (Dr Who in the late 1970’S) as Tom Bombadil in the movies but cut that part out due to time constraints. Oh how I wish they didn’t need to:)
